Below are the generic check list for common activity based on your own section / unit. Before packing your bag pack, sleeping bag and tent, please consider the following:
The duration of the activity
Is this a day trip or overnight?
If overnight, how many days and nights? The longer the duration, you need to have sufficient clothes.
Weather forecast
Weather can be unpredictable especially in Melbourne but as a scout, we are always "Be prepared".
Is it going to be a rainy day, participating in water activities, temperature level or staying dry, such factors will determine what is going into your bag pack.
NOTE: You are not going for a holiday with multiple luggage and staying in hotel. You only take what is necessary, leave less footprint and get connected with nature.
What should be in your patrol box? That depends on the camping / sleepover and cooking you will be undertaking. As a scout, this is part of your PLAN phase before your actual camping event. You should sit down as a patrol (PL /APL should lead) and elect a patrol quartermaster. As a patrol, have an effective discussion but not limited to the following:
How many people are attending?
Food
How many meals are you cooking and respective menu. It should be detail enough so you know what ingredients / material to prepare.
Cooking utensils needed (knifes, chopping board, camp stove, pots & pans..etc) ?
Clean up product (detergent, kitchen towel, tea towel. & etc) ?
If you are not sure, always seek advice from your scout leader so that you don't missed out important stuff. Always remember, " If you failed to plan, you plan to fail".
Planning is not only before but also after the event. Everybody is tired and lots of washing to do but that is not an excuse to just dump things back to the scout hall store without organising it. Note that the equipment are shared across sections and need to be ready for their respective events. Everyone is responsible and the patrol Quartermaster is accountable. Patrol should plan another day to come back (preferably within 3 days when everything is still fresh in your mind) to ensure all equipment are back to their original place and handover to the group quartermaster.
